The Albert which is known globally as a centre for folk and jazz
music. Bristol has lots of home grown talent to boast about. bands
such as Massive Attack, Portis Head and Tricky, and the likes of
Andy Shepherd which is the local master Saxophonist, and these artists
have helped bring the music scene here from strength to strength.
If its classical that tickles your fancy, go to the St. George for
an orchestral performance and you can also catch a lunch time concert
or jazz session.
The Victoria Rooms in Clifton is the home of the University’s
Music Department as well as the Colston Hall in the centre of the
city.
For a gig by popular performers like the Supremes or Nanci Griffith
or the cool Paul Weller, go to the Colston Hall which is within
walking reach.
There are venues that have bands playing every night of the week
like the Fleece and Firkin and the larger Anson Room which is part
of the University has a lot of student bands.
Smaller venues like the Fiddlers in Bedminster, or even the Louisiana
or even the Bier Keller have also regular gigs.
Smaller bands play at the Prom on Gloucester Rd., as well as at
the Albert Pub which is south of the river and at the Tantric Jazz
Cafe in the centre of the city.
For the garage type of Music club, try the Works of Evolution which
play into the early hours of the morning. The smaller clubs like
Creation and the Cafe Blue are also hip places to go to. The Lakota
is popular and if its a club - on - a - boat experience, then head
down to the harbour and seek out the Thekla Club which is moored
there.
