THE SS GREAT BRITAIN, BRISTOL

This is the worlds first iron steam ship as well as luxury liner and is now well restored to what it looked like in 1843, and it was known as a floating palace. It weighs 3,450 tonnes and was also designed by the famous Brunel in Bristol in the year 1843. The ship was retrieved from the Falkland Islands in 1970 where it lay for many years.

This ship was twice the tonnage of any ship built in 1843 and is such a unique boat to have lasted for such a long time. Although it was a steam ship, it did not rely only on steam and it had sails along with 6 masts to propel this ship through the sea. The ship was considered a monster in its day, and was 322 feet long and over 50 feet wide, and it had about 250 cabin berths for its passengers.

The liner was used to cross the Atlantic and it took between two and three weeks to cross. The ship was then used to carry troops to the Crimean War as well as for the Indian Mutiny. During the 1880s the ship was not very sea worthy and was then used to ship coal
