Exeter lies close to the coast on the river Exe and historically was the most westerly settlement of the Romans although it existed before as a Celtic village and was restored by Alfred the Great. From this time the most impressive feature and skyline attribute is the eleventh century cathedral. It is an amazing structure with two Norman towers, an ornate Gothic façade and the world's longest unbroken ceiling. Beneath the city centre are underground Norman vaulted passages that were once used to transport fresh water to the centre of the city. Today they are the only passageways open to the public.
